This one of a kind necklace focuses on a highly detailed rose pendant, hand-carved from a single piece of jasper. The dark red and green colors of the pendant and the jasper beads are accented by sterling silver beads from Bali. Hand knotted green silk highlights the colors of the natural stone beads and pendant.
The pendant is hand-carved from a single piece of fancy jasper, and the natural color gradation between the red and green creates a sharp contrast. The clasp and accent beads are sterling silver and imported from Bali. The green beads are fancy jasper (I sorted out the green ones) and red jasper. The necklace is hand-knotted on emerald green silk, and the pendant is attached with a larkshead knot. The pendant is roughly 1.75 inches in diameter, and the necklace measures roughly 19 inches, including the clasp.
Disclosure: Please note that the display mannequin in the photo is about half-human scale; the necklace has been draped around the back of the mannequin to simulate how the necklace would hang. Please refer to the other photos for a picture of the entire necklace and an indication of scale. There is a small chip on the back of the pendant, which does not affect the appearance of the necklace or the sturdiness of the pendant. Like all silk knotted necklaces, care should be taken not to get this necklace wet, and it should be stored flat: silk will stretch over time. Like all of my jewelry, this necklace is not intended for use by persons under 13.
About the stones:
Jasper is a form of quartz (silicon dioxide) and is a member of the chalcedony family. Jasper is an opaque and fine grained stone and comes in a rainbow of patterns and colors. It is a hard, with a Mohs hardness of 7.
In folklore, jasper can cure blindness and bring rain, and is believed to be a calming, soothing stone that protects against negative forces, particularly those arising from within. Red jasper is supposed to bring courage, especially to fight injustice. Green jasper balances conflicting forces and brings restful sleep.
